Established in 1972 as a humble motel, gas station, and rafting outpost on the banks of the Nantahala River, we quickly expanded by opening our first outfitter store to better serve the growing outdoor community. Whether you're chasing whitewater thrills, trekking the Appalachian Trail, or gearing up for a weekend under the stars, we’ve got the trusted gear and trail-tested know-how to help you make the most of your journey. Rooted in Bryson City, NC, and shaped by the legendary Nantahala, we're here to fuel your adventure—wherever it leads.
Our Founders
The Nantahala Outdoor Center was the dream of adventurers Payson & Aurelia Kennedy and Horace Holden Sr. Fueled by their love for the outdoors and the belief that great things happen when friends chase adventure together, NOC became a home for paddlers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts pursuing a shared passion.

As we expand from the riverside to the online world, our mission stays the same: to equip every adventurer—wherever you are—with the confidence, gear, and guidance to explore boldly.
